No matter how hard you try, you’re still having trouble studying? With exam season already here, we thought we’d give you some helpful and quick study hacks that will train your brain into retaining information better!
1. Write things down with pen and paper
We mentioned this in our previous blog post, but physically writing things down is hugely beneficial for learning and memory. The very act of using a pen or pencil to put things on paper can help you better retain the information you are writing, according to research. That’s because in the physical act of writing, signals are being sent from your hands to your brain to build motor memory. So step away from that computer!
2. Create mental associations with mind maps
The ability to make connections is not only an easier way to remember information, but it’s the fuel of creativity and intelligence. Steve Jobs famously said “Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something”. Mind Maps are an easy way to connect ideas by creating a visual overview of different connections.
3. Write flashcards for a quick memory buzz
Quickly test your knowledge of key concepts, definitions, quotes and formulas with flashcards. They may been seen as a more boring way to study, but they work! They engage your brain in active recall which is proven to help with memory!
4. Eat and stay hydrated
Yep, this one is as simple as that! Your brain needs fuel to function efficiently. This may seem obvious, but we know that as a student sometimes you might need a little reminder!
5. Jazz up your notes with colour
Like with mind maps, the use of different colours in your notes, think lots of highlighters and coloured pens, act as visual prompts to help you recall the information better. Studies have even shown that colours can affect neurological pathways in the brain, and that they can create a biochemical response that improves focus and memory. It also looks pretty and makes the whole process more enjoyable – win win!
6. Take better notes by pretending you’re taking them for someone else.
This one sounds weird, but it works! You don’t have to have anyone in particular in mind, but explaining the ideas in this way reveals what parts you really understand and which ones you don’t know so well. It also ensures that you give a thorough explanation, so why not give it a try?
So now that you’ve checked out these quick study hacks, try putting them to use the next time you’ve got an exam to prepare for. Good luck!
